Why do I need a dental crown?
- Fully rebuild teeth damaged by decay or large fillings
- Repair damage affecting structure and function
- Protect and strengthen teeth following root canal treatment
- Restore your natural bite for comfortable chewing
We first check that your tooth core is healthy and infection-free. We prepare your tooth by removing a layer of tooth structure, making sure we leave a strong core.
We take precise digital impressions of your teeth and record their colour so your crown can be made to fit perfectly. Between appointments, we protect the prepared tooth with a temporary crown.
When your crown is ready, we remove the temporary cover, check the look and fit, and cement your custom crown securely in place.

The best way to care for your crown is to stay on top of your oral hygiene. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss between your teeth and around the gumline to keep your mouth healthy. It is also important to visit your dentist for routine check-ups so they can keep an eye on your crown and the tooth underneath.
Yes, you can choose the colour. We typically match the crown to your natural tooth shade, but it is ultimately up to you. If you plan to whiten your teeth, it’s best to complete that treatment first so your crown can be made to match your new shade.
Tooth crowns are not permanent and will need replacing or repairing at some point. The treatment process is irreversible as some of your natural dental enamel is removed in order to accommodate the crown on top, so you will always need a crown on your tooth.
Most crowns last for up to 10-15 years before natural wear and tear will likely cause the need for removal and replacement.
We use local anaesthetic to numb the area completely during the preparation and fitting of your crown. Most people find having a crown is no more uncomfortable than getting a standard filling.
As a crown will require the removal of a significant amount of enamel it may not always be recommended unless absolutely necessary. If a crown has been suggested in place of an existing filling it is likely that your tooth is no longer strong enough to support a filling. In this case the only other option is extraction of the tooth. We try to avoid extraction unless absolutely necessary.
